چکیده

Identification by the Ulysses spacecraft of interstellar grains inside the planetary system provides a new window for the study of diffuse interstellar matter. Dust particles observed by Ulysses and confirmed by Galileo are more massive (≥ 10−13 g) than the ’classical’ interstellar grains. Even bigger grains (≈ 10−7 g) were observed in form of interstellar meteors. We analyze the consequences of the plentiful existence of massive grains in the diffuse interstellar medium. Astronomically observed ’classical’ interstellar grains can be described by a size distribution ranging from about 5 to 250 nm in radius (about 10−18 to 10−13 g). Lifetimes of these particles, due to mutual collisions in interstellar space, can be as short as 10f years, where f = 10 to 1000, is the fraction of total lifetime to the time when grains are exposed to supernova shocks. Shattering is a source of the smallest of these grains, but grains more massive than about 10−16 g of the classical interstellar grain population are rapidly destroyed. When applying the same shattering mechanism to the more massive grains found recently, we suggest that collisions of particles bigger than about 10−15 g provide a source for smaller grains. Because massive grains couple to the interstellar gas only over large (100 to 1000 pc) length scales, the cosmic abundance ratio of gas-to-dust needs only to be preserved averaged over corresponding volumes of space.

Dust production by impacts of interstellar dust on Edgeworth-Kuiper Belt objects

We estimated the production rate of dust grains by the impacts of interstellar dust grains on Edgeworth-Kuiper Belt objects (EKOs). In this scenario, the impact ejecta become interplanetary dust particles with radii smaller than about 10 μm. If the EKOs have hard icy surfaces and there are ∼ 1013 of these with radii≥0.1 km, the total dust production rate over the entire Edgeworth-Kuiper Belt ra...

Interstellar Dust Inside and Outside the Heliosphere

In the early 1990s, after its Jupiter flyby, the Ulysses spacecraft identified interstellar dust in the solar system. Since then the in-situ dust detector on board Ulysses continuously monitored interstellar grains with masses up to 10−13 kg, penetrating deep into the solar system. While Ulysses measured the interstellar dust stream at high ecliptic latitudes between 3 and 5 AU, interstellar im...

DNLS Solitons in Collisional Dusty Plasma

Alfven waves are possible sources of turbulence in the interstellar medium. These waves are responsible for the transport of angular momentum and energy in the accretion discs. Such waves have been studied for last several decades in space plasmas. Most of the space plasmas are dusty. They contain charged grains and coupling of the grains to the magnetic field determines the wave propagation in...

Dust Measurements in the Outer Solar System

Dust measurements in the outer solar system are reviewed. Only the plasma wave instrument on board Voyagers 1 and 2 recorded impacts in the Edgeworth-Kuiper belt (EKB). Pioneers 10 and 11 measured a constant dust flux of 10micron-sized particles out to 20 AU. Dust detectors on board Ulysses and Galileo uniquely identified micron-sized interstellar grains passing through the planetary system. Im...

Can Composite Fluffy Dust Particles Solve the Interstellar Carbon Crisis?

Recent observations suggest that the abundance of carbon in the interstellar medium is only ∼ 60% of its solar value, and that other heavy elements may be depleted by a similar amount. Furthermore, more than half of the interstellar carbon is observed to be in the gas in the form of C, leaving less than ∼ 40% of the solar carbon abundance available for the dust phase. These observations have cr...
